David Larson (Jason Robards) lost his only son in World War I and he blames God and his fellow man for the tragedy. Moody and haunted by memories, David hides inside his work on his farm. His wife (Eva Marie Saint) increases his torment by allowing their city-bred grandson Rusty (George Parry) to come and visit for the holidays. Instead of enjoying the boy's company, David is curt and verbally abusive. Rusty does not understand why he is the brunt of his grandfather's hostilities so he decides to run away on Christmas eve, hoping this way make the old man happy. Turbulent and sorrowful emotions give way to love and make this truly a Christmas to remember.
