A young songwriter (Bing Crosby) leaves his Kentucky home to try to make it in New Orleans. Eventually he winds up in New York, where he sells his songs to a music publisher, but refuses to sell his most treasured composition: "Dixie." The film is based on the life of Daniel Decatur Emmett, who wrote the classic song "Dixie." This almost-forgotten gem of a musical opens with Emmett (Bing Crosby) trying to make his way as a singer-songwriter in New Orleans. He teams up with accordion player Mr Bones (Billy de Wolfe) and the pair make their way to New York. When a music publisher begins showing an interest in Emmett's songs stardom appears to beckon, but does it do so at a price?
