Wall Street broker Robert Cain, Sr. (Edward Arnold), is jailed for embezzling. His college medical student son Bob (Tyrone Power) turns to crime to raise money for his father's release. Having no luck finding legitimate employment, using his real name, he becomes a henchman and assistant to mobster Mickey Dwyer (Lloyd Nolan). Bob (now using the name Johnny Apollo) falls for Dwyer's girl Lucky (Dorothy Lamour). When a former judge, trying to release Cain Sr., turns on Dwyer and Apollo, they both wind up in the same prison as his father. A jailbreak is set in motion, but Lucky is able to sneak word of it to Cain Sr., who prevents his son from getting involved.

“A gangster by choice, a hero by chance!”

Trivia: In the scene with Johnny and his father talking in the bedroom, the photo over Johnny's shoulder of his mother, is a picture of Tyrone Power's mother.
