Two generations of wine vintners in California's Napa Valley battle during the Prohibition Era. Philippe Rambeau (Claude Rains) is the older man who believes in his craft, while his grandson, John (Rock Hudson), is in the business solely to make money and wants to cut the family in on the thriving bootlegging business. When his cousin Elizabeth (Jean Simmons) arrives from England, the two have an affair but she is unsure of John - whose circumstance is greatly complicated by the young vineyard worker who is pregnant with his child.
